Hamburg is a big place (about 1.8 million) so there's need for easy to use and cheap public transport.

Well, you better forget the "cheap" if you need one way tickets. But once you start using day tickets, weekend tickets or other specials like the "CC" card you're on the winner's side!

Since there's quite a number of categories and areas in which the "HVV", the Hamburg public transport network, has divided the city and surrounding suburbs, it's hard to give any reasonable information about prices in short.

These are just a few examples (valid March 2002):
one way ticket
Nahbereich:
EUR 1,40
- one way ticket
Großbereich Hamburg:
EUR 2,20
one way ticket
Gesamtbereich:
EUR 3,60
- 9-o'clock-whole day ticket (valid from 9 a.m.)
Großbereich/Gesamtbereich:
EUR 4,25/6,85
whole day ticket
Großbereich/Gesamtbereich:
EUR EUR 5/7,60
family/group ticket
Großbereich/Gesamtbereich:
EUR 7,05/9,55
- CC ticket (1 month) 3 zones EUR 25,50

As for the different subway, "S-Bahn" and "A" lines I can offer you a JPG-File of the layout with all the stations of the different lines.
If you click on the small picture below you get a larger image that (most likely) won't fit into your screen but I put more weight into the readability of the stations and stops.
